Parenting series

Class One: The Importance of Health Coverage and Health Care in Your Life
This class covers the importance of health coverage for children. It also talks about the importance of having a medical home rather then going to the emergency room and the appropriate use of the ER. The Specialist discusses Medicaid, CHIP and Texas Children’s Health Plan’s Individual Medical Coverage (IMC).

Parents will receive a special gift related to the topic of each class.

Class Two: Common Childhood Illnesses and What You Can Do to Help
This class covers 16 different health topics, ranging from pink eye to broken bones. The Specialist discusses the topic and the symptoms parents will see in their child. They also talk about what parents can do at home and when to call the doctor.

Parents will receive a special gift related to the topic of each class.

Class Three: Nutrition and Exercise
This class covers the importance of eating healthy and exercising. The Specialist teaches parents what food children need at certain ages. They also give parents cooking ideas for kids and ways to increase children’s activity level.

Class Four: Safety for Your Family
In class one, parents are asked to select one of three safety topics they would like more information on. Parents can choose from home safety, poison prevention or car seat safety. A representative from the Center for Childhood Injury Prevention assists with this class. Home safety teaches parents how to improve the safety of their home and common safety hazards in the home. Poison prevention covers ways children can be poisoned, how to store cleaning supplies and medicine and how to prevent poisoning. The car seat safety class teaches parents about state laws on car seats, when a child should be in a car seat and helpful tips on installing a car seat properly.

Parents will receive a special gift related to the topic of each class.
