TMPPM Update: Hospital Beds Policy Language Only Update
Date: December 19, 2025
Attention: All Providers
Effective date: January 1, 2026
Call to action: Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) informs providers that on January 1, 2026, the Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership (TMHP) will implement a language only update to the Texas Medicaid Provider Procedures Manual (TMPPM), Durable Medical Equipment, Medical Supplies, and Nutritional Products Handbook.
This language only update, in addition to minor grammatical corrections, includes
the following information:
- A standard bed typically sold as furniture may consist of a frame, box spring, and mattress, and is of fixed height, and has no head or leg elevation adjustments. These types of beds are not:
- primarily medical in nature
- made with materials that can withstand frequent cleaning and disinfecting
- primarily used in the treatment of disease or injury
- considered Durable Medical Equipment (DME) by Texas Medicaid
- Beds which are primarily used for the purpose of safety are not a benefit of Texas Medicaid. These beds do not meet the definition of durable medical equipment as described by 42 CFR § 414.202.
Updates will be effective January 1, 2026 and can be found in the Durable Medical Equipment,
Medical Supplies, and Nutritional Products Handbook of the TMPPM.
Next steps: Providers should share this communication with their staff.
