Depending on your needs, rides may include wheelchair-lift-equipped vehicles, stretcher vans, minivans, or ambulatory vans. Please let SRH know what type of ride you need when scheduling.

Unique Abilities is a 6 - 8 week transition-to-work program that helps Texas Children’s Health Plan members with disabilities get ready for work.

Unique Abilities Program Overview

Unique Abilities is a 6 - 8 week transition-to-work program that helps Texas Children’s Health Plan members with disabilities get ready for work. The program teaches job skills and gives real-world practice to help build confidence and find meaningful jobs.

Our Purpose

Unique Abilities helps people with disabilities move from school to work by teaching job skills and providing hands-on training and personal support. The program works to close the employment gap by connecting participants with employers and offering ongoing support. This helps people build careers, gain independence, and strengthen their communities.

Who We Serve

This program helps teens and young adults with disabilities who are getting ready to leave school and start working. Participants may be finishing high school or a transition program or may have already finished. Members who are also looking for support, job skills, and real work experience.

What Participants Learn

Unique Abilities teaches job and life skills, such as:

  • How to speak and act in a professional way.
  • How to write a resume and prepare for interviews.
  • How to work as a team and solve problems.
  • Skills for living more independently.

Participants take part in hands-on activities and real-world practice to help them build confidence.

Impact

The program helps participants feel more confident, learn important job skills, and get ready for real jobs and more independence. By helping everyone join the workforce, Unique Abilities makes communities healthier, local economies stronger, and life better for people with disabilities.

Program Guidelines

To participate in Unique Abilities, individuals must:

  • Be a Texas Children’s Health Plan STAR or CHIP member
  • Be 18–22 years old
  • Be at least 18 years old by June 1 of the program year
  • Identify as a person with a disability

Program Benefits & Opportunities

Participants in Unique Abilities will:

  • Learn skills to get ready for work.
  • Gain job skills that can be used in many careers.
  • Improve talking and social skills.
  • Build confidence in themselves.
  • Become more independent.
  • Get help with finding jobs and support at work.
  • Receive special accommodation if needed.
  • Get help with transportation when needed.

Internship opportunities may be patient-facing or non-patient-facing roles. This depends on how ready the participant is.
