First Trimester of Pregnancy

(Weeks 1-12)

The first trimester is the earliest phase of pregnancy. It begins on the first day of your last period and lasts until the end of the 12th week of your pregnancy. This means that by the time you find out you are pregnant, you might already be five or six weeks pregnant.

A lot happens during the first three months of pregnancy. It’s a time of great anticipation and of rapid changes for both you and your baby. Click here to view an infographic about how the body changes during pregnancy from the American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

It is best to make your first prenatal appointment as soon as you find out that you are pregnant, ideally in your first trimester or within 42 days of joining the Health Plan.

Getting prenatal care early can help prevent or manage any health risks such as blood pressure issues, bleeding, or low birth weight. It sets the stage for the overall well-being of both mom and baby.

We are here to help!

  • Sign up for prenatal classes at no cost!
  • Bring a list of the prescribed and over-the-counter medications you currently take to the first prenatal appointment.
  • Start taking prenatal vitamins! You can either start taking them before you are pregnant or talk to your doctor about getting a prescription. Click here for a list of covered prenatal vitamins.
  • Apply for WIC, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
  • Determine the hospital you will give birth to your baby at and check if your provider delivers there.
